The 2024 election introduced several changes to the Denton Central Appraisal District. While the new legislation aimed to enhance representation for taxpayers in Denton County, it ultimately fell short of its promise.
The Denton Central Appraisal District Board of Directors is comprised of 9 members: 5 appointed by taxing entities, 3 elected directly by the taxpayers, and the Tax Assessor Collector, who now serves as a voting member of the Board.
Can you guess who holds the advantage?
A common complaint from taxpayers is that "my taxes are too high!" As a result, the Denton Central Appraisal District often bears the brunt of this criticism. However, it's important to recognize that the Appraisal District's role is limited to setting property values, while the elected officials within the taxing entities determine the tax rates. Yes, the same entities that hold the majority of votes on the board! It’s the city councils and school board members who set the primary tax rates that are assessed on your property.
Keep this in mind the next time you consider skipping your vote or hesitate to research the candidates.
Get involved and make sure to get out and vote!
Over the past 24 months, I have remained committed to serving the taxpayers of Denton County in being the only member of the board with a 100% attendance record, and I refuse to rubber stamp approvals that favor only the taxing entities. Your support in the upcoming election is vital for me to continue advocating for clear and fair processes within the appraisal district, especially regarding the tax protest process. The taxpayers of Denton County deserve fair treatment in the assessment and appeal of their property values.
